September 15, 2020 marks the 85th anniversary of Sultanbek
Myrzakhmetovich Kozhakhmetov, a prominent metallurgist, academician of the
National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan, chief researcher of
the Institute of Metallurgy and Ore Beneficiation, Doctor of Technical
Sciences, professor, laureate of the USSR State Prize in Science and
Technology.

He is well known in Kazakhstan, CIS countries and far
abroad for his developments in the field of theory and technology of autogenous
processes used for processing sulfide concentrates of heavy non-ferrous metals.

After graduating from the Moscow Institute of
Non-Ferrous Metals and Gold in 1958, S.M. Kozhakhmetov at the request of the
President of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR Academician K.I.
Satpayev was sent to the Institute of Metallurgy and Beneficiation, where he
rose from a senior laboratory assistant to the director of the institute.

For a long time S.M. Kozhakhmetov successfully
combined scientific activity with scientific, organizational and social work,
being a member of the presidium, academician-secretary of the Department of
Earth Sciences, vice-president of the National Academy of Sciences of the
Kazakh SSR. He takes an active part in the work of the National Academy of
Engineering (NAE) and the National Academy of Natural Sciences (KazNANS) of the
Republic of Kazakhstan, being a full member-academician of these academies.

Sultanbek Myrzakhmetovich is a world famous scientist
in the field of theory and development of new technologies for the production
of heavy non-ferrous metals and related elements. With his direct participation
and under his leadership, a scientific direction is developing – physical and
chemical foundations and the development of highly efficient and new autogenous
processes in copper metallurgy. High-temperature studies of the thermodynamics,
kinetics and mechanism of redox processes in sulfide-oxide systems, the
controlled vapor-phase mechanism of oxidation and sublimation of unstable metal
sulfides, and liquid-phase interactions of matte-slag melts with the gas phase
constitute the main areas of physicochemical research by S.M. Kozhakhmetov,
performed under his scientific guidance and with the active participation of
his many students.

Fundamentally new autogenous processes developed,
tested and implemented at copper smelters under the leadership of S.M.
Kozhakhmetova together with scientists from Kazakhstan and Russia.

In 1974, at the Irtysh copper-smelting plant, the KIVCET
method of smelting complex copper-zinc raw materials was mastered on an industrial
scale. In 1985-1987. a joint team of scientists from MISIS, IMOB and
GINTSVETMET under the general scientific supervision of Professor A.V.
Vanyukov, at the Balkhash copper smelter, a method of melting copper
concentrates in a liquid bath (PV – Vanyukov process) was mastered. At present,
this plant, with the launch of industrial units PV-1 and PV-2, has been
completely transferred to this technology for processing lean concentrates with
the output of copper-rich mattes. The Vanyukov process has been developed on an
industrial scale in Russia and the Republic of Uzbekistan at the Norilsk,
Sredneuralsk and Almalyk copper smelters.

In 1978, for the development and industrial
development for the first time in the world of kivcet technology at the Irtysh
copper-smelting plant, as part of a team of scientists and engineers of the
USSR and Kazakh SSR S.M. Kozhakhmetov was awarded the USSR State Prize in
Science and Technology. In the same year, he successfully defended his doctoral
dissertation at the Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys.

In 2004, for the publication of a work with Israeli
scientists S.M. Kozhakhmetov and his graduate student E.B. Kenzhaliev in the
United States is awarded the honorary titles of Laureates of the International
Society of Minerals, Metals and Materials for Extractive Metallurgy, and in
2005 Sultanbek Myrzakhmetovich for his joint scientific activities with CIS
scientists becomes the Laureate of the International Academic Popularity Rating
“Golden Fortune” in Kiev.

CM. Kozhakhmetov is the author of over 600 scientific
works and inventions, including 10 patents of foreign countries (USA, Canada,
Japan, Australia, France, etc.).

His students have defended 17 candidate and 5 doctoral
dissertations. He was awarded the Orders of Friendship of Peoples, Ormet,
medals and certificates of honor of the Supreme Council of the Kazakh SSR and
the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Over the past decade, at the Institute of Metallurgy
and Beneficiation under the scientific supervision of Academician S.M.
Kozhakhmetov, together with his closest associates, developed and tested new
processes for contractile pyrometallurgical selection of refractory
gold-bearing raw materials and oxidized nickel ores.

Academician S.M. Kozhakhmetov, being one of the
leaders of metallurgical science in Kazakhstan, enjoys great authority and
respect from both scientists and manufacturers working in the field of
non-ferrous metallurgy.

The
staff of the Institute of Metallurgy and Ore Beneficiation heartily
congratulates Sultanbek Myrzakhmetovich on his anniversary and wishes him good
health, creative activity and prosperity!
